There seems to be a lot of hype about Twitter these days so, what is Twitter anyway? In my previous blog entry, we showed an image that shows twitter increasing at 750+ percent. The question is why? What is twitter and why would I want to tweet? Why are there nearly 4 million people tweeting away on twitter?

Stumbling around the net, I found a couple other articles about twitter. Rebecca Reisner writes in Business Week that Frank Eliason, a customer service manager for Comcast, is using twitter to aid in customer support and that other companies are following suit. You may also want to take a look at How Much Twitter is Too Much? Another one that you may find interesting is that Twitter just hired their first business development guru who’s been “… hired in part to handle the “crushing amount” of partnership proposals that Twitter receives.”.

It’s very easy to tie up a lot of time in social networking. If it’s set up and used wisely, it can also save time, maintain relationships and provide solutions while increasing productivity. Like everything else, these too will only be what we make of them.

I’m just learning twitter and if you want to follow, click here!

Social networking is growing exponentially and according to a new article written by falkow, facebook catches up with myspace and we’ve provided a graph below to include twitter in the mix. Take a look for yourself at these stats.

Facebook vs. Myspace vs. Twitter

According to mashable, Facebook closed out 2008 by passing Myspace by very small margins, however according to techcrunch, back in April of ‘08 Facebook had more members. Makes you wonder who’s accurate here.

Compete.com Graph for Facebook vs Myspace vs Twitter

The economy may be collapsing but social networking is on the rise. As more and more people stay at home, more and more people are obviously using social media to connect with friends. Notably, twitter is a reasonably new application that has enjoyed over 700% growth in the second half of 2008. Although it’s nowhere near Facebook and Myspace, it will get closer when people start figuring out how to use it.

I don’t have a myspace account, wait, I do have a myspace account but it’s so cluttered up and spammy that I don’t use it so when facebook came out, it was like a breath of fresh air. The video below signifies the difference in these two powerhouse social networks.

Today I went to EJ Thomas Hall in Akron Ohio to a forum that the University of Akron sponsors. They invite different speakers from all over the world for the benefit of the local community. The speaker today was Don Tapscott, author of Wikinomics which is basically a real good introduction for non-internet savvy individuals who desire to understand the paradigm shift of both the corporate business model and social collaboration.

Anyway, the video here produced by Cambridge House is very good and very informative and I highly recommend watching it and as far as actually seeing him talk in person… I’d recommend skipping it because he basically tries to say verbatim, the exact same thing in this video.

Special thanks to The University of Akron for sponsoring this forum for the community. There are good number of speakers this year and I plan on attending them all. If you’d like to find out more about the forum and dates, please visit EJ Thomas Hall, University of Akron Forum Series. I will continue to write about each speaker during the forum and will try to find videos to be posted here.
