Akismet from Wordpress - Spam Protection

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

I know, I know. I’ve been horrible about this blogging thing. It’s often hard to figure out what to blog about for starters and as soon as you have an idea about what you can blog about, the phone rings or you get an email. Geesh!

Today I’d like to blog about Akismet and the Akismet key provided by Wordpress. Before I get into that though, I’d like to say that up until this time, I’ve been a great fan of Joomla and still am. I started building websites with Mambo and when some of the members left and went to Joomla, I liked support and community members around it. Needless to say, I ended up getting very lucky with this domain name. So not all familiar with wordpress, I thought because it said blog and Wordpress was the most popular, I’d use it. Not only for the experience of using it, but for my clients who may ask for it.

Needless to say, I started using Wordpress from Wordpress.org but did not sign up with an account on wordpress.com. So, my first impression of Wordpress wasn’t all that great. On a daily basis, I was getting so many spam comments it was ridiculous. I had gotten to the point that I just discarded all comments automatically and was almost afraid to log into the justinsblog.com because of the number of comments I have to sift through and bulk moderate.

Anyway, I ended up doing a search on Google and found Wordpress.com and signed up and got my akismet key. I entered it into the little box a couple weeks ago and forgot about it. Logged in today and the only comment I had to approve was a legitimate one, (sorry I did not respond sooner Bryan). I hadn’t even noticed that the emails stopped completely.

So, this blog, which is long over due , is simply my experience with this Wordpress.org software, which is free to all. Use the akismet key and you’ll be glad you did. I was afraid to even log in with the amount of spam comments I had to moderate… while trying not to miss a legit comment that someone took the time to write.

OK, blogging is getting better. I hope to put more up here and now that I actually remember that this site is here, I think I’ll start using it. Thanks to the Akismet Key, I’m beginning to like this wordpress software. … OK, can I be done now?

New Years Resolution to Blog!

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

OK, that’s one of my New Year Resolutions. I apologize to the 10,000 people who visit here each month that there hasn’t been any updates however, now it’s time to commit and start blogging. I guess it starts with a first step… back to, “What do I blog about?”…

… Well for starters, it’s a new year. This is 2008 and it’s going to be a good year for everyone and I just have that feeling. While there may be a lot of financial systems failing currently and the war going on in Iraq, and of course the new Presidential Elections for the US… It’s still going to be a good year! Why?

That’s a great question. My answer is simple. It’s going to be a good year because I’m going to make it a good year. Why is that?… Well, because I’m not going to make it a bad year. Does that make sense? Most certainly it does. Please allow me to explain.

The year ahead, this great 2008, is going to be exactly what we make of it. If we believe it’s going to be a bad year, then what can we expect?… Bad! It’s very elementary if you think about it. You will get what you expect. Same goes for life. If our expectations are small, so is the get.

I’m happy to be here and happy to be blessed with a computer and the opportunity to live and grow up in this age of technology and the Internet. It’s 2008 and it’s going to be a good year because we’re going to make it a good year. There are a lot of negative things happening in the world today and it’s important to focus on the positive things that are equal to, or even greater than all the negative ones. As I grow older I have discovered for myself that the Universe is merely a reflection of what each of us reflects into it.

My New Years Resolutions

  1. Blog - Yep, that’s what this is. It’s a WordPress Blog and it’s sort of my first.
  2. Quit Smoking - This is the year I’m going to quit smoking. It’s a horrible habit and it’s something that almost governs a persons life and it’s time to quit.
  3. See the Good in All Things - Work harder to find and see the good in all things and discard the negatives or bad things. This takes time and practice and it’s work in progress. :)
  4. More Family Time - This is important. Although I work from home, it’s still very difficult to get quality family time.
  5. Have a Great Year - Yep, tis the season.

That about sums it for my New Years Blog. It’s a start and hope you will enjoy reading and hope your new year is a wonderful and prosperous one as well.

Blogging about blogging - Where to start?

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Now that I have started this blog… and after many years of things going on that I could blog about… where is one supposed to start?

I see that there are many people who start blogs but never write anything or update it infrequently and I think they have some of the same thoughts that I’m having… Where do I start?… Well, I guess this is my second post.
